Educational Outreach
The South Carolina Shakespeare Company has a number of
educational opportunities from our Summer Camp for kids ages
7-17 years old to in house residencies
for elementary, middle and senior high schools.
Educational programs
are an important component of the company's mission. In addition to their main stage
productions performed in Columbia's city parks, Shakespeare on Tour has performed for
high schools and universities throughout the state. Following each show, the company
provides detailed study guides, acting workshops and open forums for a full
exploration of Shakespeare and his works.
The company also has encouraged participation from children in actual productions ranging
from The Tempest to A Midsummer Night's Dream, providing an artistic and educational
foundation for area youth. Cultural unity and cooperation is also a high priority for the
company. An alliance with Benedict College for A Christmas Carol met with great success,
and the company has performed in conjunction with other statewide arts organizations
such as the International Shakespeare Festival at Clemson University. The company also
was selected to perform at the internationally renowned Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival in
Charleston in a series of sold-out performances.
