The South Carolina Shakespeare Company

Education

Educational programs are an important component of the company's mission. We believe that drama teaches people of all ages. The Company is versatile enough to visit schools around the state to help students discover aspects of Shakespeare's works or to concentrate on one show in particular.

In addition to our main stage productions performed in Columbia's city parks, Shakespeare on Tour performs for high schools and universities throughout the state. Following each show, the company provides detailed study guides, acting workshops and open forums for a full exploration of Shakespeare and his works. The company also has encouraged participation from children in actual productions ranging from The Tempest to A Midsummer Night's Dream to Macbeth, providing an artistic and educational foundation for area youth.

Cultural unity and cooperation is also a high priority for the company. An alliance with Benedict College for A Christmas Carol met with great success, and the company has performed in conjunction with other statewide arts organizations such as the International Shakespeare Festival at Clemson University. The company also was selected to perform at the internationally renowned Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival in Charleston in a series of sold-out performances.
